Schwinn Loop Folding Bike Review: The Pros and Cons

One of Schwinn’s most popular bikes is the Schwinn Loop folding bike 20” 7-speed model. They’ve been making folding bikes since the 1970s, so they know a thing or two about producing a bike that has all the features you really need, at a price you can afford.

And this one fits the bill very nicely. It has proven to be one of the bestselling folding bikes around over recent years. That’s not surprising as it comes with multiple gears, an alloy frame and is built to last but at a price that’s not much more than a budget single speed folding bike!

As it’s such a popular model and one that you’re going to come across when researching a foldable bike to buy for yourself, it was an ideal candidate for one of our full reviews, which you have just been lucky enough to find. Our review will cover everything you need to know about the Loop so that you can decide if this is the model for you without having to look anywhere else.

How Easy is It To fold the Schwinn Loop Folding Bike?

With folding bikes, this is the most obvious thing you need to know and with this model, folding it down is very simple and takes around just 15 seconds.

The fold down process is basically this:

  1. Undo the seat post quick release lever and drop the seat all the way down
  2. Fold up the right-hand pedal
  3. Open the handle post quick release latch and fold down the handlebars
  4. Open the quick release frame latch and fold the bike in half
  5. That’s it! You can stow it in the bag at this point if required

One thing we would like to see is some sort of latching mechanism to secure the bike in its folded position but a couple of Velcro straps or bungee cords will do the job just as well.

When folded the bike measures around 30 inches long by 32 inches high and 11 inches wide which is not the smallest we’ve seen a folding bike pack down to, but is still reasonable.

If you do want to stow the bike in its bag, be prepared to wrestle with it for a couple of minutes as it’s not the best bike bag out there. In fact, many reviewers have noted that it’s not very good quality at all and is not made to carry the bike around in, just to store it really.

Unfolding the bike is of course just a reverse of the steps above and should also only take you 10-15 seconds before you’re ready to ride!

What Are the Frame and Other Components Made of?

What metals are used to construct a bike can make a big difference to the overall weight, which in the Loop’s case is just under 33lbs. This is definitely on the heavy side of average for a folding bike so is something to think about if you’re likely to be carrying it around for any distance.

The frame is actually made from an aluminum alloy, which by its nature is going to be fairly lightweight, so you would think that many of the remaining components are made of steel to account for the weight and you would be right.

The handlebars and seat post are steel as are the 3-piece crank, forks, and Shimano gear set. This all adds up with only the wheels, brake calipers and brake handles being made of a more lightweight alloy. The pedals are also fairly light being made of resin, although there are lighter materials out there.

With all this steel used in the construction you gain one considerable benefit though, the Loop is rugged, strong and built to last.

How Easy Is It to Get On and Off the Schwinn Loop folding Bike?

When you look at pictures of the loop, it’s quite easy to see where it gets its name from as the main frame loops down quite low from the front to the back.

This design has one huge benefit in that the step over point is quite low to the ground. Being quite important to many people, this is one of the easiest bikes to mount.

What Gears are Fitted To the Schwinn Loop Folding Bike?

Although not high-end components, the gears fitted to this model are at least made by Shimano. For most users these are absolutely fine.

You get 7-speeds that will provide ample gearing. This helps to get around the typical urban setting, which is what most folding bikes are aimed at. Many reviewers have found they are quite smooth to change using the grip shift on the handlebars. And they work well around town as long as they are set up properly and looked after.

The chainring on this bike is just a single one. It has a protecting plastic ring on both sides called a pant guard. This is designed to stop your clothing from getting oil marks on them from the chain. From what we can tell, it seems to work pretty effectively.

How About the Brakes, Wheels, and Tires?

The brakes fitted to this machine are the standard linear pull type that operates against the rim of the wheel. They work well enough but are never going to be as good as a decent set of disc brakes although you would be paying a premium to get a folding bike fitted with those.

The wheels are made of a lightweight alloy. As we know and the tires are city tires, designed to provide a smooth ride on urban streets. Most reports suggest they do a pretty good job with lots of grip even in the wet.

Can You Adjust the Seat and Handlebar Height on This Model?

The seat post is fully adjustable and can be raised up to suit even the tallest of riders. The seat itself is one of the things many people choose to replace at some stage. It has proven too hard. However, we recommend giving it a try before doing that as it may suit you just fine.

Unfortunately, the handlebars are fixed so there is no way to raise or lower them. But in truth, this does not seem to have caused a problem amongst owners. Many find the upright riding position quite comfortable once you get used to it.

Anything Else Worth Mentioning?

Before we conclude our review, there are a few things left to point out about the Schwinn Loop  folding bike that are worth a mention.

As well as the pant guard, you also have a full sized plastic fender front and back to protect your clothes from splashes and mud. There is also a handy kickstand on the bike that allows you to prop the bike up whenever you need to without having to find something to lean it against. Sounds simple, but it’s amazing how useful this is when commuting.

The bike also comes in a choice of three colors at the time of writing; black, white or titanium silver and all having matching trim for a very stylish, modern look. It’s also worth noting that currently the black model is considerably cheaper than the other two for some reason and we actually prefer it anyway, so keep a look out for that.

Finally, there is a large rear rack integrated into the frame that will provide ample space to carry books, groceries, bags etc. As it is actually part of the frame it’s very strong and adds little weight overall.

Summing it Up

We would have been happier if the Schwinn Loop folding bike was not quite so heavy. Apart from that, we think this is a bike that many will be happy with. Solid build quality, a good range of gears and simple folding make this an ideal bike for the casual commuter. It’s also ideal for someone who just needs a bike that doesn’t take much space up to store.
